King’s Day Amsterdam

Amsterdam Coffee Shop   March 30, 2015  Comments Off on King’s Day Amsterdam

Koningsdad, better known to us as Kings Day, is one of the most lively and eccentric annual celebrations in Amsterdam.

Formerly referred to as Queens Day, Kings Day came to life on April 30th 2013 after the inauguration of King Willem-Alexander. Locals and tourists from all over the world take advantage of this day of partying and flock onto the cobbled streets and narrow canals of Amsterdam for a day of fun, creating a sea of orange as far as the eye can see.

Now, each year the festivities occur on the 27th April to reflect King Willem-Alexander’s birthday, unless the 27th falls on a Sunday. Traditionally, Sunday is a day of rest so the celebrations are generally moved to the Saturday.

Although you may think a celebration for the Monarch on his birthday would be slightly mild, or even a bank holiday given for everybody just to enjoy day of rest – wrong! The Dutch know how to party, and Kings Day is no exception. It’s a celebration that makes Kings and Queens jealous across the globe.

The orange clad attendees gather for countless outdoor gatherings and spark an electric vibe that lasts from the morning right through to the night, which is ignited with the assistance of DJs, live music, parties and a street market that spans Amsterdam.

For the majority, Koningsdad is seen as an excuse for the blow-out, but the day does accommodate residents and visitors of all ages and tastes. The festivities are organised sparsely across the city so no matter what your location is, you can easily get involved in games, sports, face painting, parties and the likes.

Vrijmarkt – literally translates to ‘free market’ – and people gather to sell their second-hand goods and it quickly transforms Amsterdam’s streets and parks into one of the world’s largest flea markets.

On King’s Day, Vondelpark becomes one of the more fun locations to go and have a rummage. The park is reserved for children, they can go and try their hand out at trading and sell on their unwanted toys and clothes they have grown out of.

The park opens at 9:00am and it fills up rather quickly and often swarmed with children that turn into buskers for the day bringing cheer to Vondelpark.

Other areas that are traditionally reserved exclusively for children include:

  • Amsteveld
  • Artisplein
  • Amsterdamse Port
  • Bellamyplein
  • Deppermarkt
  • Buikslotermeerplein
  • Erasmuspark
  • Leliegracht
  • Frederiksplein
  • Sarphatipark
  • Plein ’40 – ’50
  • NDSM, Vrijhaven
  • Vondelpark
  • Westerpark
  • Sint Antioniesluis
  • Stadspark Tussenmeer

The main attraction is of course, the party scene, it appears that’s where the majority of the budget goes anyway. And for thousands of locals and pilgrims, this is absolutely perfect! There are world-famous DJs in every corner and live music streams across the city with gridlocked canals and bustling streets. A vibrant atmosphere is alive all day and night.

Here’s a few of Amsterdam Coffeeshop Tours favourite things to do on Kings Day:

  • Boat Parade – The boat parade commences in the early afternoon of Koningsdad on the beautiful Prinsengracht Canal. The canal literally becomes home to one big floating party. The canal is gridlocked and people dance and drink on boats soaking up the sun and the great vibe. If you’re lucky – some passers-by might invite you on to their boat!
  • Jordaan – Jordaan is a fun location for many on Kings Day. There is a great crowded market where you’ll find it hard to resist purchasing a few pretty things and whilst you’re shopping you will be able to hear live folk music ring through the market and the surrounding areas.
  • Westermarkt & Reguliersdwaarstraat – The Homo Monument in Westermarkt and Reguilersdwaarstraat transform into the biggest and the best gay parties in Amsterdam for the day. The parties here usually go in hard and the dancing commences the night before Kings Day. All of the gay clubs in Reguliersdwaarstraat are within a short 10 minute walk from Leidsplein.
  • Parties & Events – Some of the following parties are major dance parties that require tickets, although some are hosted on small stags in café’s. We’ve provided a list of the biggest and best, but be aware, the events that require a ticket go on sale prior to the event and tickets are not available on the day. You must be organised! For any events you wish to attend, please make sure you find out the ticket policy, and make sure you don’t leave it until last minute to purchase if the event requires a ticket.
